Hi, I’m Susan McCorkindale, and you’ve stumbled upon my newsletter, Life On The Inside. Thank you so much for being here!
Some background:
In April of 2023, my older son, who has autism, was arrested, charged with a sex crime, and held without bond for 13 days. He’s innocent, and the real crime is keeping someone who’s autistic in jail for two weeks.
But I promise not to rant about that right now.
When he was arrested I was in Florida, which is where I live with my husband. I flew to Virginia, where my son lives, and have been with him ever since. At this writing, I’ve been with him for nine months.
He’s under house arrest. I’m the warden. What could possibly go wrong?
Life On The Inside was born of this situation and it’s where I share what it’s like to be stuck in the house — and not because of a pandemic — all day, every day with my son who Can’t. Stop. Talking.
It’s funny, sad, frustrating, infuriating, and holy shit hysterical. And that’s just at breakfast.
If you or someone you love has ever been under house arrest or, if you or someone you love has autism or, if you’re simply a parent who’s petrified of something like this happening to your child, stick around.
I’ll show you how it’s not done.
Life On The Inside starts with Part One: Little Friday and goes from there. Numbered, easy to follow, like chapters in the book I hope it will be someday. Or you can jump in and start reading wherever you like.
I post a few times each week, sometimes less if I’m putting out various and sundry work fires — remotely, obviously — sometimes more when I’m losing it and need to rant like I promised not to do at the start of this post.
Again, thank you for being here. I hope you’ll subscribe and encourage others to do so, too!
I’ve sometimes feared my autistic son going through a situation in jail.
I can assure you I’d also wind up there.
As a mom, I think you're doing a magnificent job!
I bet many moms (of autistic children) can relate.
Hugs!
